Tips:

  • Finish your story. It doesn't have to be perfect, in fact, first drafts rarely are. But you can't edit a story that isn't written. Just write and you can fill it all in and fix it later.
  • Set a certain time every day when you can write consistently.
  • Attend a writing conference near you, or attend one online.
  • Brandon Sanderson teaches creative writing at BYU and has an entire semester worth of classes on YouTube! I watched every single one at the beginning of my writing journey and found these classes so helpful.
  • When it's time to search for an editor, send out at least five sample edits to make sure you find someone who maintains your voice and edits in a way that fits your style.
  • Invest in an editor before you publish, whether it's copy and line editing or proofreading. Whatever you can afford.

Resources:

  • Scrivener. I've used this program for YEARS and I love it. Many people get overwhelmed with all the features, but I don't use most of them. It works perfect for me!
  • Brandon Sanderson teaches creative writing at BYU and has an entire semester worth of classes for FREE on YouTube. I watched every single one at the beginning of my writing journey and found them very valuable.
  • Vellum. This is a program you pay for one time, and then you can use it to format your own books! It's intuitive and easy to use, and creates beautiful books.
  • Cover Designer. This is genre specific, of course, but if you write fantasy, Dragana with Graphicsoulart is incredible and I highly recommend her.
  • Newsletter and website. I use Mailerlite and found it relatively easy to set up!
